FLOOD ZONE DOME

Domes are excellent way to minimize the damage from floods providing the dome is designed correctly. If you live in a flood zone, there are dome designs you should embrace sooner than others. The principle behind a flood zone dome is to get your main living area off of ground level. This can be easily accomplished by placing your garage on the lower ground-level floor. This room can also become a place for your water heater and utility room. This way, if there is a flood, the most you stand to lose is your washer and dryer. (I presume that you and your family have left with your cars.)

Eye of Storm

Many people are familiar with the "Eye of the Storm." This is a wonderfully designed dome built on the shores of Sullivans Island, South Carolina. The archways are designed that should a wave reach the dome, the water will pass right through.

Of course, one might get the impression that this concept is only available to the very rich. This simply is not so. The same principle can be designed into a smaller dome. A perfect example can be found on page 69 of the Dome Living Book. There you will find a 32 foot diameter 2-story home built with a stem wall entitled "Beach House."
